Homeowner Guide
The first hour matters more than most homeowners think. Here's a practical, non-panicked sequence.
Move anything valuable out from under the affected area, and set a bucket or container to catch active drips. If a ceiling is visibly bulging with trapped water, a small controlled hole with a screwdriver โ into the bucket, not into open air โ can relieve pressure and prevent a larger, uncontrolled collapse.
Water and light fixtures don't mix. If water is pooling near an outlet or fixture, switch off the circuit at the breaker if you can do so safely, and keep the area clear until it's dried out.
Photos of the stain, the drip, and any visible source help later โ whether for a roofing company's assessment or an insurance claim. It's easy to forget this step once the immediate mess is handled.
An interior stain often shows up several feet from the actual entry point, since water travels along framing and insulation before it drips through. A roof-side inspection is what actually locates the source.
Tarping or a temporary patch can prevent a manageable leak from becoming a much larger problem while a full repair is scheduled.
